Eloping in Banff & the Canadian Rockies
Banff National Park is the easiest world-class elopement destination in North America for foreign couples. Alberta issues marriage licences to non-residents the same day for about CAD $100, Parks Canada's ceremony registration is free apart from a refundable deposit, and Moraine Lake, Lake Louise and Peyto Lake all sit within an hour of each other on paved roads.
We photograph the Canadian Rockies every summer and fall, and the biggest thing we bring is logistics. Moraine Lake has been closed to personal vehicles since 2023, Lake Louise parking fills before dawn, and larch season compresses the entire internet into two hiking valleys for three weeks. Knowing the shuttle systems, the quiet lakeshores and the hour each spot empties is most of the job.

Why couples elope in Banff & the Canadian Rockies
Paperwork you can do on arrival
Alberta has no residency requirement and no waiting period. Walk into a registry office together with ID, pay about CAD $100, and leave with a licence valid 90 days. It is the simplest legal route of any mountain destination we shoot.
Six famous lakes in one park system
Moraine, Louise, Peyto, Bow, Minnewanka and Emerald just over the British Columbia line in Yoho. Each has a different colour and mood, and all are linked by two scenic highways.
Larch season
For roughly three weeks from mid-September the alpine larches turn gold against fresh snow. It is the best fall show in the Rockies and we build entire elopements around it.

Moraine Lake
The Valley of the Ten Peaks, and the reason half our couples email us. Personal vehicles are banned, so access is by Parks Canada shuttle, Roam transit or a commercial sunrise shuttle, roughly June to mid-October. We book the first departure and have you on the rockpile before the light does anything.
Lake Louise
Glacier-fed turquoise beneath Victoria Glacier. The lakeshore is busy by 8 a.m. in summer, so we shoot at first light or walk the flat lakeshore trail to the quieter far end. In larch season we climb to the Lake Agnes teahouse side for gold above the blue.
Peyto Lake
The wolf-head lake on the Icefields Parkway, ten minutes' walk from the car. Its viewing platform faces north, which keeps it photogenic almost all day, and the parkway pullouts beyond it stay remarkably quiet.
Emerald Lake, Yoho
Twenty minutes over the BC border and consistently calmer than anything in Banff proper. A lodge on the water, canoes for portraits, and forested shoreline that works even in flat weather.
Larch Valley & Sentinel Pass
The larch hike, starting from Moraine Lake, gaining about 500 metres. Mid-September to early October only. It is popular for a reason, and a dawn shuttle start puts you in the golden trees ahead of the crowd.
Tunnel Mountain & the Vermilion Lakes
Ten minutes from Banff townsite, with Mount Rundle reflected in still water at sunrise and sunset. This is where we go for relaxed, low-effort ceremony mornings and late-evening light after dinner in town.

The paperwork
Getting legally married in Banff & the Canadian Rockies
Alberta makes legal marriage genuinely easy for foreigners. Both of you visit any Alberta registry office in person with two pieces of ID, pay about CAD $100, and receive a marriage licence on the spot with no residency requirement and no waiting period. The licence is valid for 90 days. The ceremony itself needs an authorised officiant, most of our couples use an Alberta marriage commissioner who will travel to a lakeshore, plus two witnesses aged 18 or over. We can stand in as witnesses if it is just the two of you.
Inside Banff National Park, ceremonies require a free wedding ceremony registration with Parks Canada, which caps groups at 20 people including vendors and asks for a refundable damage deposit. Everyone entering the park also needs a park pass, about CAD $11 per adult per day. Popular sites like Moraine Lake and Lake Louise have set rules on where groups can stand, and commercial photography inside the park requires the photographer to hold a licence, which we do. We handle the registration and shuttle bookings as part of planning.

Yes, easily. Alberta issues marriage licences to non-residents with no waiting period: both partners appear at a registry office with ID, pay about CAD $100, and the licence is valid 90 days. Add an authorised officiant and two adult witnesses and the marriage is recognised in the US, UK, EU and Australia.
How do we get to Moraine Lake for a sunrise ceremony?
Personal vehicles have been banned on Moraine Lake Road since 2023. Access is by Parks Canada shuttle from the Lake Louise park-and-ride, Roam public transit, or commercial sunrise shuttles that arrive before first light. The road is open roughly June to mid-October. Mid-September to early October, usually peaking the last two weeks of September. Larch Valley above Moraine Lake and the Lake Agnes area are the classic hikes. Dates shift year to year with weather, so we build a flexible day around the forecast rather than promising one specific valley.
