Is it legal for foreigners to get married in Iceland?

Yes, and this is a large part of why Iceland became the world's favourite elopement destination. Iceland has no residency or citizenship requirement for marriage. Any two adults, including same-sex couples, can legally marry here, and the Icelandic marriage certificate you receive is recognised in the United States, United Kingdom, EU, Canada, Australia and nearly everywhere else.

The process runs through the District Commissioner (Sýslumaður). You submit a marriage notification form along with birth certificates, valid passports, and a certificate of marital status issued within eight weeks of your wedding date. Divorced applicants also submit their final divorce decree. Everything should reach the commissioner's office at least three weeks before the ceremony, though we advise sending it six to eight weeks out to leave room for questions.

The ceremony itself can be performed at a commissioner's office, by a church minister, or, the route nearly all our couples take, by an independent celebrant such as one from Siðmennt, Iceland's humanist association. Celebrants will travel: on a beach, beside a waterfall, on a glacier with a guide. The legal part takes five minutes; the rest of the ceremony is entirely yours.

The symbolic ceremony shortcut

Roughly half of the couples we photograph in Iceland skip the Icelandic paperwork entirely. They sign legal documents at their local courthouse the week before or after the trip, and hold their real ceremony, vows, rings, celebrant and all, in Iceland as a symbolic ceremony.

No paperwork deadlines, no document couriering, no dependency on office processing times. Nothing about the day looks or feels different, and your anniversary is whichever date you decide it is. If your home country's paperwork is simple, this is the lowest-stress route, and we will tell you honestly if we think it is the right one for you.

When should you elope in Iceland?

There is no wrong month, only different films. June and July bring the midnight sun: golden light from 10 p.m. past midnight and every road and highland track open. August keeps the access with softer nights. September and October are our favourite: first aurora, autumn rust on the moss, and the crowds thinning by the week.

November through March is the dramatic option. You trade daylight, four to six hours of it, for northern lights, ice caves, and storm light that makes every gallery look like a myth. Winter elopements need flexible timelines and a photographer who has worked those conditions; we build weather buffers into every winter itinerary and have never lost a wedding to one.

April and May are the quiet bargain: thawing waterfalls at full power, lupine fields from late May, low airfares and empty locations.

The best places to elope in Iceland

The south coast is the classic route for a reason: within two hours you can stand under Skógafoss, walk behind Seljalandsfoss, put rings on at Reynisfjara's basalt stacks and finish among glacier ice at Sólheimajökull. For couples with two days we push west to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, Kirkjufell, sea cliffs, lava fields, or into Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon further east.

What matters more than the list is the sequencing. Every famous location has a crowd schedule, and ten years of shooting here means we know it: which beach is empty at 6 a.m., which waterfall clears at dinner time, which canyon needs overcast light. Your timeline is built around those windows.

Do you need permits?

Iceland is refreshingly light on ceremony permits compared to US national parks. Most public locations allow small ceremonies without any paperwork. The exceptions we manage for you: certain sites on private land charge access or parking fees, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon area has commercial filming rules, drone use is regulated near protected areas and crowds, and glacier access always requires a certified guide.
