The cypress groves of San Quirico d'Orcia
The circular cypress cluster west of town and the Vitaleta road nearby are the icons of the valley. Both sit on working farmland beside public roads; we shoot them at first light, before the vans, and know which field margins are fair game.
Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta
A tiny 16th-century chapel alone on a ridgeline between San Quirico and Pienza, framed by paired cypresses. Reached by a short white-gravel walk, it is the valley's most requested vow spot for good reason.
Pienza
Pope Pius II's 15th-century 'ideal city', small enough to cross in ten minutes, with lanes named after love (Via del Bacio, the street of the kiss) and pecorino shops for the day's provisions. Golden hour on the south walls looks over the whole valley.
Bagno Vignoni
A village whose main square is a steaming Renaissance thermal pool. Strange, quiet and beautiful in the cold months especially, and ten minutes from every major Val d'Orcia viewpoint.
Siena
For couples who want stone as well as hills: the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, the striped Duomo, and evening light in brick alleys. We usually pair Siena as day two rather than squeezing it into a valley day.

The paperwork
Getting legally married in Tuscany
Italy permits civil marriage for foreign couples, but plan on months, not weeks. Most nationalities need a Nulla Osta from their consulate; US citizens need an Atto Notorio plus a sworn consular declaration, and everything must be translated and presented to the comune. The ceremony itself must happen in an authorised location, a town hall or a venue the comune has licensed, and several Tuscan towns, including Siena and Certaldo, have genuinely beautiful civil halls.
