Foreign couples can legally marry in South Africa through Home Affairs with manageable paperwork, symbolic ceremonies are equally common, and the exchange rate makes this the best-value spectacular destination we photograph.
The city rewards early risers and flexible plans. The 'Cape Doctor' southeaster can close the Table Mountain cableway for an afternoon, the mountain wears its tablecloth cloud on its own schedule, and the light on the Twelve Apostles at sunset is worth building an entire day around. Table Mountain
The cableway reaches the 1,000-metre plateau in five minutes, or Platteklip Gorge earns it in about three hours of steep hiking. Ceremonies and professional photography inside Table Mountain National Park require a SANParks permit, which we arrange, and the first cable car of the morning beats both crowds and wind.
Chapman's Peak Drive
Nine kilometres of cliff road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek with 114 curves and pullouts made for golden hour. The toll road's western aspect makes it the city's sunset session, with Noordhoek's long white beach waiting below.
Boulders Beach & Cape Point
Simon's Town's granite coves host an African penguin colony you view from boardwalks, entry fee payable to SANParks. Continue south and Cape Point's lighthouse cliffs end the peninsula in 200-metre drops where two currents argue.
The winelands: Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
Cape Dutch estates under jagged mountains, 45 minutes from the city. Vineyard ceremonies, cellar dinners and mountain light that turns pink over the vines. Franschhoek's valley is the prettier drive; Stellenbosch has the deeper estate list.
Plettenberg Bay & Robberg
The Garden Route's headline bay, five to six hours east of Cape Town. The Robberg Peninsula's circular trail passes a Cape fur seal colony below sandstone cliffs, and the beaches run wide and swimmable. Our favourite Garden Route ceremony base.
Tsitsikamma & Storms River
Ancient forest meeting a violent coast, with suspension bridges crossing the Storms River mouth inside the national park. Dark wood, black rock, white water: the moody counterweight to Plettenberg's blue.

The paperwork
Getting legally married in Cape Town & the Garden Route
Foreign couples can legally marry in South Africa. You both appear at a Department of Home Affairs office (or before a registered marriage officer) with passports, and complete the BI-31 declaration confirming you are free to marry; divorced or widowed partners bring supporting documents. The marriage must be performed by a registered marriage officer with two witnesses, and Home Affairs issues an abridged certificate on the day, with the full certificate to follow. South Africa has recognised same-sex civil marriage since 2006. The process is real but manageable; we schedule the appointments into your itinerary.
Plenty of our couples still choose the symbolic route, especially when the ceremony spot is a mountain ledge at sunrise and a government office visit does not fit the week. Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006. We build the appointment into your elopement week, or you can sign at home and keep the ceremony symbolic.
Do we need a permit for Table Mountain?
For a ceremony or professional photography inside Table Mountain National Park, yes: SANParks requires a filming and photography permit, arranged in advance for a fee. Cableway tickets are separate. We handle the permit, time the first car up, and hold a lower-altitude backup for wind days, when the cableway closes.
When is the best time to elope in Cape Town?
February to April for settled summer weather with softening winds, September and October for whales, spring flowers and value. High summer (December, January) is reliably sunny but windy and busy. Winter, June to August, brings rain fronts and drama, workable with two or three buffer days.
How much does a Cape Town elopement cost?

Flights, five nights in a boutique hotel, a marriage officer, hair and makeup, flowers and a winelands dinner typically bring couples to $9,000 to $14,000 all-in, exceptional for what you get.
How much time does the Garden Route add?
Three to four days minimum. Plettenberg Bay sits five to six hours' drive east, so we structure it as elopement in Cape Town, then a honeymoon road trip with a second session at Robberg or Tsitsikamma. Between June and November, southern right whales are a realistic bonus at Hermanus or Plettenberg.
